Europe
The European Infodemiology Initiative is a collaboration between EUPHA, WHO, PGP, and numerous public health partners to strengthen Europe’s capacity to understand and respond to the health information environment. The Initiative helps health authorities detect emerging narratives, identify information needs, and translate evidence into communications that protect health and rebuild public trust. It connects the technical infrastructure of health institutions with the community networks people already trust, ensuring accurate, timely information reaches those who need it most
Building a Modern Public Health Infrastructure
The Infodemiology Initiative creates structure around how health information flows. Health authorities identify public health priorities such as key topics, professional associations, and community based organizations (CBOs) in affected populations. These relationships are organized into a coordinated system that distributes vetted, evidence-based communications through trusted messengers. Media monitoring and continuous feedback from partners guide each message. CBOs and health associations share these materials through their own channels—such as newsletters, WhatsApp groups, and local events—ensuring information is localized and relevant. A continuous feedback loop brings community insights back to health authorities, keeping communications responsive, measurable, and grounded in lived experience.
A Collaborative Model for Health Communication
At its core, the European Infodemiology Initiative is about coordination. It equips public health institutions with training, systems, and support to monitor narratives, engage communities, and act on real-time data. The approach aligns national and local efforts across Europe, building a communications infrastructure tthat is scalable, sustainable, and ready for any health priority. By combining scientific monitoring with trusted messenger networks, the Initiative strengthens trust between health authorities and the people they serve.
